The Well-Being Of Singaporeans

by Heng-Cheong Leong, MyAppleMenu

The Human Development Index, as described by Wikipedia, is the "measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, and standard of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare." Three dimensions are measured: health (life expectancy), knowledge (literacy), and decent standard of living (GDP at purchasing power parity).

The 2007 report, which measures data from year 2005, has been released, and Singapore maintained its 25th ranking while improving in terms of the value of the index, scoring a 0.922 as compared to 0.916 the year previous.

Singapore has been ranked behind Iceland (#1), Norway (#2), Australia (#3), Switzerland (#7), United States (#12), and Hong Kong (#21).
