GIC Signals Shift To Emerging Markets

Sundeep Tucker, Financial Times

Singapore's sovereign wealth fund yesterday signalled that its investment focus would shift to emerging markets after unveiling a 20 per cent drop in the value of its portfolio.

The Government of Singapore Investment Corp (GIC) does not disclose precise figures of its portfolio but is estimated by analysts to manage more than $200bn. In effect, this means that the aggregate value of its assets dropped by at least $40bn in the year to March - partly because of ill-timed investments in western assets. Tweet

Life Really Got Worse In Singapore.....

Diary of A Singaporean Mind

The numbers clearly shows that that our cost of living has risen much faster than our wages. We have gotten worse compared with other Asian cities such as KL, Seoul, Hong Kong etc. When interviewed by Business Times, MP Halimah said govt measures ranging from Workfare Income Supplement for low-wage earners, to rebates and subsidies in healthcare, education and housing help people to cope much better. Did she forget that the govt also implemented means testing that will significantly increase the cost of medical care for Singaporeans? Did she forget that the cost of housing has escalated by 40% in 3 years as govt subsidy remains more or less the same? Workfare? Most of us don't qualify and you don't envy those who do because at their income level life is just miserable in Singapore. Tweet

UBS Survey Shows Singapore Slipping In Standard Of Living

Yawning Bread

Our economy seems to be one where we have an extraordinary gap between the powerful and the powerless, even by Asian standards -- countries not known for softie-softie socialism. Average wages for Singapore as a whole are pulled down the city rankings because our low-paid are so lowly paid. Meanwhile, one suspects that our prices seem to be kept up not so much by labour costs but by profit-taking and the government's share.

With the resulting degradation of purchasing power, one can then ask: Is the average Singaporean really having it so good? Tweet

The PAP govt allowed a large influx of foreigners into the country with a large number of them obtaining PRs or citizenship in the past 3 years making them eligible for the purchase of HDB flats. The HDB did not provide sufficient supply for the increase demand that is why prices were going up even when the economy was slowing down. Hainanese or Singapore chicken rice is a great sharing dish and because the chicken is served at room temperature, it’s possible to get ahead with all the preparations.

The only jobs that need to be done at the last minute are finalising the rice and reheating the broth to be sipped with the meal It’s all about the skin, my Singaporean chef friend, Eddie Lim, said, preparing me for the first time I tasted chicken rice at the long-gone Equatorial in Soho’s Chinatown, where it was made every Saturday lunchtime. Temasek CEO Ho Ching appears to be firmly in charge once again after a rocky year for the sovereign wealth fund in which it failed in its efforts to replace her by getting its first foreign chief executive.

Ho may now be able to take some credit for the fund's stronger position, and there is no timeframe for getting a replacement. But the leadership issue and questions about investment strategy still cloud the fund's global image. Tweet

Still, it's difficult to be inspired by Temasek's current strategy -- seemingly a holding pattern that has the fund focusing on its Asian holdings and warning of "medium-term risks" that justify caution. The presence of Section 152, a constitutional guarantee of minority protection, goes a long way towards alleviating the damaging forces of such vectors in our society. Far from undermining equality, Section 152 is an attempt to rectify asymmetries of power, to achieve parity, among those who are not born equal.
