The Coming Around Of Chee Soon Juan And SDP?

Martyn See, Only "Objective" And "Factual" Political Films Please, We're Singaporeans

That the MSM has now come knocking on Chee's door, despite his open criticisms of them, is something of a revelation. More interesting to me, are how the dynamics in opposition politics have suddenly shifted. Now that the press has nudged SDP closer to the mainstream, will it then follow that the absentees of the night's function will be less afraid to associate themselves with Chee and SDP?

Govt Does Not Decide Characteristics Of Singapore's Markets: SM Goh

Dare To Be Daft

Insane Polygons

These are trying times for Singapore. If I am going to vote for somebody, than I need that person to have courage, tenacity, passion and integrity. I can’t be voting for some yes man who is in it for himself. So that is why if given the chance I will vote for the opposition because I may not know the man personally, but the act of standing up as a opposition politician already speaks volumes about his character to me.

It is almost akin to speculating in the property market. Head to the National Environment Agency during its monthly tender exercise, submit a bid for one of the vacant hawker centre stalls, and cross your fingers.

If you are successful, you could rent the stall out later for a higher fee, and make a tidy profit of close to $2,000 in some cases.

Public Transport Should Cover Remote Areas Too

Ivy Singh-Lim, Kranji Farmers Association, Straits Times

Transport is key to moving an economy. Ms Saw Phaik Hwa, chief executive officer of SMRT, said it herself in The Business Times a few weeks ago ('Joint effort by one and all', Feb 8). MFA Spokesman's Comments In Response To Media Queries On The Decision On Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's Appeal

Singapore Government

It is of course very disappointing that her appeal did not

succeed. A dialogue among the Myanmar authorities, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

We believe that all Myanmars, irrespective of political affiliation, must share these goals which are also in the interests of the entire region. We thus hope that the Myanmar authorities will, in their own interests, allow her to participate in the political process in a meaningful way as soon as possible.

MFA Spokesman's Comments In Response To Media Queries About The Comments Made To The Media By Dr Silviu Ionescu

As we have said many times, if Dr Ionescu was not the driver as he claims, then he should take the opportunity to attend the Inquiry to give his account of the events and pose questions to the witnesses, in order that the true circumstances surrounding the accidents may be determined. Welfare In Singapore: The Stingy Nanny

Economist

Fond of having the last word, Singapore's government can nevertheless be flexible. Who would have thought it would be building casinos? But one policy that shows no sign of reversing is Singapore’s antipathy towards public welfare. The state’s attitude can be simply put: being poor here is your own fault. Citizens are obliged to save for the future, rely on their families and not expect any handouts from the government unless they hit rock bottom. The emphasis on family extends into old age: retired parents can sue children who fail to support them. In government circles “welfare” remains a dirty word, cousin to sloth and waste. Singapore may be a nanny state, but it is by no means an indulgent nanny.

Why Minimum Wage System Won't Work

Sanjay Perera, Straits Times

Businesses will likely transfer any increase in wages to the consumer via higher prices of products. This in turn will lead to another round of higher minimum wages. Forced higher wages all round will lead to increased liquidity and inflationary pressure on prices.

So either you don't get to buy things because your minimum wages pushed the price too high, or you don't get to buy things because you are earning way below minimum wages to afford to buy anything decent.

It will be manipulated to hire fewer people so a company's wage costs do not rise. And it will mean inflated prices for everyone.

Fewer people to produce the same amount of goods? That is called increased productivity, which, the last I checked with NTUC, is a good thing.

A minimum wage system will not solve all problems -- it is not a silver bullet. But it is definitely a better system than what we have today.

Public Housing Flats – Singaporeans Come First Or Foreigners?

Andrew Loh, The Online Citizen

The truth is that there is no shortage of rental flats available. TOC has shown that the HDB has converted and reserved two blocks of flats in Toa Payoh, at least one block in Havelock Road, five blocks in Bedok and five more blocks in Tiong Bahru as rental flats for foreigners.

The problem is that the HDB is not only the sole provider of public housing flats in Singapore, it is also a player in the rental market. As we have shown, the HDB acquires old flats through the SERS programme, and through its subsidiary, EM Services (the HDB owns 75 per cent of the company), refurbishes or upgrades the flats, and lets them out for rent. Perhaps this is one way the HDB circumvents its own rules which say foreigners are ineligible for rental flats offered by the HDB.

Now, the question of conflict of interest arises – would the HDB rent out these flats to those such as the homeless at rents of between S$26 and S$120 and play its role as public housing provider, or operate as a private company (via EM Services) and rents out the flats to foreigners for profit, fetching anywhere from S$450 per tenant (as in the Havelock Road hostel) to S$5,000 (as in the Global Residence case)?

As in the case of the flats in Bedok, Toa Payoh and Havelock Road, the question is: Why are so many SERS flats being reserved and rented out to foreigners instead of Singaporeans who are in the queue for public rental flats?

Singapore Pulls The Welcome Mat For Foreign Workers

Ben Bland, Asia Sentinel

Ultimately, the thrifty Singaporean government does not believe in spending its way out of trouble.

HDB Homeless Policy

Goh Meng Seng, Singapore Alternatives

Mr Mah’s policy failures have given rise to a small but growing number of homeless Singaporeans. Closing his eyes and pretending that they don’t exist will not make these homeless Singaporeans go away. Given his track record of monumental policy failures, would you want to entrust Singapore’s future to him?

John Gee, Transient Workers Count Too, Straits Times

Unless the levy increase is punitive, it is unlikely to discourage the employment of foreign workers, but will just be an increased tax on foreign labour employment.

Having More Single Seats Will Help The PAP

Jason Wong, Straits Times

Imagining Singapore Without PAP: Why Not?

Ng E-Jay, Sgpolitics.net

To accept the notion that it has to be the PAP managing our CPF pension scheme, our foreign talent policies, and our housing policies is to accept the idea that regardless of how flawed those policies currently are, we have to continue accepting the status quo and that no one else can manage them better than the PAP.

The Main Problem With The ESC Report.

Diary of A Singaporean Mind

By focussing on growth rather than the economic well being of Singaporeans, the biggest economic challenges faced by ordinary Singaporeans may go unsolved in the coming decade.

HDB’s Inflexible Policies Will Result In More Homeless S’poreans

Andrew Loh / Leong Sze Hian, The Online Citizen

To put it briefly, the HDB needs to update its policies, rules and regulations to better address the many different situations which home owners face. Having a one-size-fits-all set of policies may instead contribute to the growing number of homeless people – a number which has doubled over the last year. And this, even by any stretch of Mr Mah’s imagination, cannot be “good for the country.”

Will Singapore Resorts Pay Off For Casino Operators?

Sonia Kolesnikov-Jessop, New York Times

As Singapore gets ready to open its first casinos, there is little doubt that the controversial decision it made five years ago to allow gambling is going to pay economic dividends for the city-state. But whether the operators of the two giant resorts will be reaping jackpots anytime soon remains the big question.

With noncasino revenues expected to account for only 20 percent of the resorts’ earnings, both companies will need to generate significant gaming business to recoup their investments.

What’s Missing From Economic Strategies Committee Report

Gerald Giam

Singapore cannot continue to depend so heavily on manufacturing exports and foreign MNCs to power our economy, when many MNCs are making plans to relocate to cheaper locations. We need to develop new engines of growth that are sustainable and benefit ordinary Singaporeans, not just foreigners and rich elites.

Singapore Home Prices To Lag Behind Hong Kong On Building Boom

Joyce Koh and Regina Tan, Bloomberg

Singapore’s luxury-home prices won’t match Hong Kong’s because an increase in building ahead of two casino projects in the city-state will see nine times the number of new apartments going up over the next three years than in Hong Kong, according to real estate broker Savills Plc. Singapore’s high-end home prices rose 4 percent in 2009, while Chinese buyers fueled a 45 percent jump in Hong Kong, Savills said.

The Singapore Government – Worth Its Weight In Gold?

Wakka Kong and Simeon Ang, The Online Citizen

For some time now, the Americans have been criticizing about the excesses of Wall Street and the resulting use of Main Street to shore up the country’s economy. Putting this in context with the Singaporean society, it is time for the excesses of the government to be checked by the man on Main Street. It is time the government of Singapore realises that they are only in power on the premise that they govern for the people and not for themselves.

The Curious Case Of Block 29

Andrew Loh / Joshua Chiang, The Online Citizen

It is thus puzzling to us that the three blocks, which have been classified as “SERS completed” on the HDB website, apparently were never demolished, as Ms Kee claimed all SERS block would be; and that the residents of blocks 31 and 33 are apparently still living there even though “a completed SERS site is one where all SERS residents have vacated their sold flats”, according to the definition given on the HDB website.

Reuters

Singapore Airlines, one of the world’s biggest carriers by market value, on Tuesday reported its best quarterly profit in almost two years as cargo volumes rebounded and travel improved. Singapore GLCs Political Donations To Australia’s Political Parties

Why Is HDB Able To Reveal Breakdown Cost Of Their Flats Publicly In 1981 And Not Now?

The Temasek Review

With public anger fast rising over the escalating HDB flat prices, it is time Singaporeans exert pressure on HDB and other relevant agencies to reveal the truth of the matter – the exact constuction and land costs of HDB flats for us to judge for ourselves if HDB flats are indeed heavily “subsidized” by HDB and if they are worth the price we are paying for.

Singapore Panel Issues Subdued Economic Forecast

Patrick Barta and Sam Holmes, Wall Street Journal

Slower growth isn't easily accepted in Singapore, which prides itself on having one of the most dynamic economies in Asia. It has consistently outperformed expectations in large part by positioning itself as a haven for investors and multinationals seeking a big presence in Asia but worried about unpredictable laws and unstable governments in less-developed neighboring countries.

Maintaining rapid growth also is seen as key to making sure an already-wide gap between rich and poor doesn't get worse in Singapore and possibly lead to social unrest.

What Is A General Election About?

Wong Wee Nam, Sgpolitics.net

The opposition is, therefore, right in wanting to Mr. Mah, as minister of national development, to defend his policy in the coming General Election. If he cannot defend his position in a constituency that he has nursed for 22 years and whose residents have already bought flats at an affordable rate long time ago, then his opponents deserve to be congratulated.

Singapore Will Continue To Welcome Foreign Talent

Blowin' In The Wind

“The Government’s First Responsibility Is To Singaporeans”

Andrew Loh, The Online Citizen

In short, this is what has happened to the homeless who were ‘helped” by MCYS: They were put into this block of flats at Tiong Bahru, given a whole set of restrictive rules to follow, disallowed from cooking or making the flat a home (with the prohibitions on bringing in anything which is “bulky”) and told to shut up if the “media” comes calling and asking questions.

In a nutshell, shut up and do as you’re told.

Leave No Man Behind? - Homeless Campers, The Inconvenient Truth

Goh Meng Seng, Singapore Alternatives

I would now call upon the ministers of these relevant authorities to search their soul deeply on what they really believe in. Minister Khaw has said it right, they must do the right things instead of just trying to do things right.

The Behaviour Of Little Lee Kuan Yews

Andrew Loh, The Online Citizen

It would seem that the authority given to Nparks officers on the ground are either extensive – to the point where they can issue arbitrary and ridiculous orders – or that the officers on the ground are abusing their authority and powers, along with their blatant and rude behavior bordering on contempt for the poor and homeless.

Nparks officers, and indeed all public servants, including those from MCYS, must keep in mind that they are public servants and not “little Lee Kuan Yews” in charge of their own little domains – issuing orders and rules and regulations according to their own fancies. Public parks in Singapore belong to Singaporeans. Nparks officers are merely custodians of these parks.

Singapore Aims To Ease Fears Over Immigration

Kevin Brown, Financial Times

Singapore will seek on Monday to reassure multinational companies that plans to tighten immigration curbs will not affect the city state’s openness to relocation by white-collar expatriates.

In a report to be presented on Monday, the review committee will say that the focus of reductions in the flow of foreigners must be on relatively unskilled blue-collar immigrants, who work mainly in the service, construction and transport industries, rather than on workers concentrated in the financial sector and professions such as law and accountancy.

No Auto Ban On Ex-offenders

Vivian Heng, Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore, Straits Times

When CRA receives the SEL applications from the casino operators, it will verify the information disclosed by the applicant and conduct its own investigation. A false declaration or misleading information is not only material to the assessment of suitability by CRA, but is also an offence.

CRA received nearly 5,000 SEL applications. It rejected only 121 or 2.5 per cent. Of the 121 rejected, 104 were found to have not fully declared their crime or crime-related antecedents.

NSP Sec-gen: 'It's Not About Mr Mah Or Me'

Teo Xuanwei, Today

A day after national development minister Mah Bow Tan responded to one of the opposition's election strategies - and that is to target him on housing policy issues - the National Solidarity Party has clarified that the fight was over his policy decisions, and not over personalities.

Mah Bow Tan Misses The Point, Gets Caught Red-handed By NSP

Ng E-Jay, Sgpolitics.net

I urge opposition parties to unite on this matter and conduct a vigorous campaign to put political pressure on the PAP to take urgent and drastic measures to correct the housing malaise that has infected Singapore.

SDP's Alternative Economic Programme

Singapore Democrat News

Singaporeans must break out of the mindset that only the PAP has the ideas that work for Singapore. We must believe that opposition parties like the SDP have solutions and alternative programmes that are not just workable for Singapore but crucial for our future economic well-being - solutions that, as we have stated, even the PAP has adopted.

Pulling A Fast One (PAP Style)

Insane Polygons

Just because you plan to treat foreigners like shit doesn’t mean you’re not treating singaporeans like shit too. Its just that now, you are giving foreigners an even shittier treatment. Citizens are still going to paying the same rate regardless of whether you are cutting subsidies or not. Its not like whatever money you save from cutting them are channelled back into the pockets of singaporeans.

Affordable Flats Still Available? Are You Sure?

Ng E-Jay, Sgpolitics.net

The PAP Government started off providing truly affordable housing to citizens, but in the past twenty years this has been abandoned in favour of quick gains and a clear desire to milk the Singapore demographic for what it is worth, never mind the long term future.
