The Upside In A Slowdown For Singapore Developers

Sam Holmes, Wall Street Journal

To be sure, backing a property developer in Singapore now is a bet that policy makers will successfully walk that fine line: slowing price appreciation down without, in the worst case, engineering a long-lasting slump in prices. But the government is pushing against strong forces, like low interest rates in the region and a strengthening macroeconomic backdrop. Prices, meanwhile, which jumped 25% on-year in the first quarter, remain high.

The present system for providing grants is misguided. It’s wrong for the students, the schools and the industry. By all means provide a grant. But not for schools or courses, but for employers who take the commercial risk of hiring rookies.

Libel Laws Apply To All: Ministry Of Law

Chong Wan Yieng, Ministry of Law, Today

There is no merit to the suggestion that Singapore has "weak" libel laws. Our libel laws are intended to provide for the protection of personal reputation from false attacks. Writers are allowed to criticise anybody in Singapore, including the Government. They have always been free to do so and Singapore law does not seek to proscribe that. This, together with the right of response, allows an informed debate to take place in the media.

SMRT Chief Is Misleading!

Goh Meng Seng, Singapore Alternatives

SMRT chief executive officer and president Saw Phaik Hwa in Sunday ST report "SMRT: Tighter security will not mean higher fare" has claimed that while trains may be crowded, they are not at 'crush load' and 'people can board the train - it is whether they choose to'. She used the example of Hong Kong MTR trains' ability to take in 2000 people during peak hours as compared to singapore's MRT train of 1400 people during peak hours to support her view.

Ms Saw is either misleading or ignorant. HK MTR trains have EIGHT cabins. Singapore's trains have only six cabins! How could she use it as a comparison to Singapore's train system is really beyond my comprehension!

Economies Of Southeast Asia Look Solid

Sonia Kolesnikov-Jessop, New York Times

Sonia Kolesnikov-Jessop, New York Times

At the southern tip of Malaysia, a new metropolis is slowly taking shape. When completed in 2025, Iskandar Malaysia will spread across 2,217 square kilometers or 547,830 acres, approximately three times the area of Singapore, the island state on the other side of a narrow strait.

Press Freedoms Lag In Singapore

Justin D. Martin, Columbia Journalism Review

Singapore’s leaders fit the quintessential description of benevolent dictators, as they support economic policies that clearly benefit their people, but are sternly intolerant of criticism. In March 2010, the International Herald Tribune paid $114,000 for suggesting that Singapore’s longtime rulers, previously Lee Kuan Yew and currently his son Lee Hsien Loong, were a dynasty that had maintained power by means other than merit and the people’s blessing. (The toothless obedience of the New York Times-owned Herald Tribune, which dutifully shelled out a hundred grand before it was even formally sued, deserves a case study all its own).

What Singapore’s overseers don’t seem to grasp is that without a press free to monitor power and challenge wrongdoing, even otherwise “developed” countries suffer greatly. One need look no farther east than Dubai for an example of a locale which, in the absence of an unencumbered press able to expose profligacy and corruption, is now bearing a debt crisis for which its rulers and citizens were pitifully unprepared.

The country can tap solar energy as a source of power, while wind and nuclear energy aren’t options, Lee said at a conference in the city state today. Neighboring countries may raise the price of gas sold to Singapore even though a contract is in place, he said.

Business Beyond the Reef

Normally, in any kind of diplomatic fracas, informal communication continues between the two sides. This is absolutely essential if the countries involved are to be able to have “what if” discussions. “What if” my side takes this action, or your does that – so surprises are kept to a minimum and mutually acceptable solutions have a chance of being developed. Singapore shut this off. The Embassy could find no one to talk to in the Foreign Ministry, the judicial system, or any other part of the Singapore Government. Word had obviously gone out from on high not to talk to the Americans. This likely led to Singapore’s seemingly honest surprise that the White House was angered when Fay’s caning sentence was reduced by only two strokes. Singapore’s foreign policy objective had been achieved when President Clinton asked for clemency, but keeping the four strokes just rubbed it in and kept Singapore under a cloud during the remainder of the Clinton Administration.

Singapore Could Do With 2 Instead Of 3 Local Banks-Lee

Singapore could do better with two instead of three local banks so they could expand overseas in a more meaningful manner, the city-state's senior statesman Lee Kuan Yew said on Friday.

"I would have preferred personally that there were only two banks because I don't think Singapore was big enough for three banks," Lee said at a dinner hosted by the Association of Banks in Singapore.

Through all these incidents the Prime Minister has, and is continuing, to hide. Mr Lee Hsien Loong has not uttered a word about the recent floods and the security breach into tthe MRT depot. He has shown absolutely zero leadership.

Government Did Not Say It Doesn't Have A Role In SMRT's Security

Heng-Cheong Leong, MyAppleMenu

I think a lot of bloggers are jumping into the wrong conclusions regarding what Mr Shanmugam was saying over the weekend.

This is what he said: "The most effective way to organise our security framework is to identify key installations that needs the government to provide security, and to recommend a framework on how security should be provided for the rest of the buildings in Singapore... Hence the key for us, is to make sure, that organisations which are profits driven, pay enough attention to the security aspects of their businesses."

To me, for this particular case involving SMRT, I read it as: SMRT will have to, at its own cost, ensure it is secure enough to the government's satisfaction. It is a typical regulator-private company relationship, and the role of the government is not to say that security is entirely SMRT's problem and the government doesn't care. The role of the government is to set the minimum level of security requirements, and SMRT, by hook or by crook, have to satisfy the government's requirement.

Of course, you may argue that the Singapore government is not doing a good job in its role as the regulator. And you may be right. But that's a different argument altogether.

SMRT Security: Its Sole Responsibility Says Law Minister Shanmugam

The Woodlands Emergency Prepardeness Cum Racial Harmony Family Day 2010 - Comments To The Media By Mr K. Shanmugam, Minister For Law And 2nd Minister For Home Affairs, 20 June 2010

Ministry Of Home Affairs, Singapore Government

The most effective way to organise our security framework is to identify key installations that needs the government to provide security, and to recommend a framework on how security should be provided for the rest of the buildings in Singapore. For private organisations' premises, such as the SMRT depot which has been gazetted as a protected place, the actual security of the premise would be within the control of the company. SMRT has also accepted that this is so. Hence the key for us, is to make sure, that organisations which are profits driven, pay enough attention to the security aspects of their businesses. For SMRT, it is particularly crucial that they take security seriously as they transport hundreds of thousands of people everyday.

The Great Singapore Farce – Now Showing

Andrew Loh, The Online Citizen

If the minister insists that SMRT is indeed solely responsible, why then is the government providing resources to them, which would contradict what Mr Shanmugam said – that it would be unfair “for the public, through the government, to pay for that security either in manpower terms or in terms of the costs”? Is the government not already doing so – especially through Transcom?

And since it already is, why is it so adamant in passing the responsibility to the SMRT? Should not the government accept part of the responsibility as well?

The National Library is currently holding an exhibition on William Farquhar to shed some light upon his role as a founding father of Singapore. While the exhibition states to “[provide] an insight into the often-untold contributions of William Farquhar in the development of early Singapore”, it seems to go beyond that. It almost seems as though the Singapore Heritage Society is almost trying to subtly (or not very subtly) portray Farquhar’s contributions to be larger than Raffles in building Singapore. In fact, I hardly find it implicit.

The Flash Floods: Why Singaporeans Are Angry And Fearful

Guanyinmiao's Musings

The most puzzling aspect of this entire episode is the fact that the PUB and its executive officers have staunchly refused to apologise for the oversight; despite taking responsibility for the multitude of damages sustained by Singaporeans, the agency chose to rehash antiquated arguments about how future plans were in place to improve the drainage systems, the water infrastructure et cetera. Unfortunately, such public-relations assurances – which had already been highlighted by the PUB during the Bukit Timah flash floods – only serve to reinforce its ineffectiveness and inefficiency.

"NUS History Society (NUSHS) had indicated that Junior College and Upper Secondary students were the target audience and that academics would form the line-up of speakers. The initial line-up provided by the NUSHS for NLB's support were academics from the local tertiary institutions researching on these areas. The academic exploration that the seminar would pursue was also in line with NLB's programming objectives to seek insights into Singapore's history through research and study. The late inclusion of Mr Vincent Cheng, by the society was not consistent with the direction of the initial proposed line-up, of academics, by NUSHS."

Reinventing Urban Transport

The KTM corridor would make a wonderful "rails to trails" type project. It would be tragic not to preserve this right-of-way for non-motorised transport. I support this suggestion.
